Person Centred Counselling

What is Person Centred Counselling (PCC)?

Person Centred Counselling, also known as Client Centred Counselling, developed by Carl Rogers, is a compassionate and empathetic approach to therapy that places the individual at the heart of the healing process. This humanistic form of counselling emphasises unconditional positive regard, empathy, and active listening, creating a safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore your feelings, thoughts, and experiences.

A Person Centred Counsellor acts as a supportive facilitator, allowing clients to discover their own solutions and personal growth. This client driven approach empowers individuals to tap into their innate capacity for self-awareness and self-actualisation, ultimately promoting emotional well-being and personal development.

Difference between Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Person Centred Counselling

CBT is a goal-oriented therapy that emphasises the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It operates on the premise that our thoughts influence our emotions and behaviours and aims to identify and challenge negative thought patterns and beliefs. Whilst Person Centred Therapy is non-directive, allowing clients to lead the conversation and explore their feelings and experiences at their own pace.

Both approaches are effective. The choice between them ultimately boils down to your preferences, goals, and therapeutic needs.

Our Unique Approach

Trust is a fundamental element of the therapeutic relationship. Our compassionate Qualified Counsellors and Trainee Counsellors create a welcoming, safe, and non-judgmental environment, where we facilitate a space for you to feel seen, heard, respected, and understood. This secure atmosphere fosters trust, empathy, and open communication, encouraging you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and concerns at your own pace. We offer a tailored approach to therapy, where your needs and goals take centre stage. We achieve this by:

  • Active Listening: Our Counsellors practice active listening, paying close attention to what you are saying without judgment or interpretation. This helps you feel heard and understood.
  • Socratic Questioning: This involves gently challenging automatic thoughts and feelings, which can be a valuable aspect of the therapeutic process. Our Counsellors employ this technique to encourage you to examine your immediate, instinctive reactions and beliefs, helping you gain a deeper understanding of the underlying reasons behind your thoughts and emotions. This introspective process leads to personal growth, self-awareness, and the development of more adaptive thinking and coping strategies.
  • Reflective Empathy: Our Counsellors reflect your feelings, thoughts, and experiences, helping you gain a deeper understanding of your emotions and self-awareness.
  • Unconditional Positive Regard: Our Counsellors maintain an attitude of unconditional positive regard, which means they accept and respect you without judgment. This creates an atmosphere of self-acceptance.
  • Self-Exploration: You are empowered to explore your own experiences and emotions, promoting self-discovery, and personal growth. This often leads to insights into your concerns and a deeper understanding of yourself.
  • Self-Actualisation: Our ultimate goal is to help you move towards self-actualisation, where you realise your full potential and become the best version of yourself.
  • Problem Solving: Whilst your Counsellor does not provide direct advice or solutions, they can help you explore and develop your problem-solving skills. Clients discover their own answers within the therapeutic process.
  • Nurturing Relationship: The therapeutic alliance plays a pivotal role in the counselling process. Your counsellor’s deep empathy, transparency, unwavering unconditional positive regard, and dedicated active listening form the bedrock of your self-discovery, personal growth, and healing journey. Providing you with a supportive atmosphere where you can explore, reflect, and thrive.
